Non-Toxic Camping Gear Guide: PFAS, Flame Retardants and What to Buy Instead

Non toxic camping gear is a phrase that gets used loosely, so this guide is specific. It covers the four classes of chemistry that actually show up in tents, sleeping bags, pads, packs and rain shells: PFAS water repellents, flame retardants, polyurethane coatings and foams, and shedding synthetic fibre. For each one it says what it is, where it is, what the industry has done about it, and what to look for instead. No scare stories, no health claims; just the materials, and the questions to ask any brand, including us.

What “non-toxic” can honestly mean

Nothing made of matter is chemical-free, and a product label cannot promise you an outcome for your body. What “non-toxic” can honestly mean for outdoor gear is narrower and more useful: the product was made without specific, named classes of additives that are persistent in the environment, that regulators have moved to restrict, or that a maker has simply decided are not worth their trade-offs. That is a checklist you can hold any brand to.

PFAS and DWR: where they show up

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a family of thousands of fluorinated compounds prized in textiles because they repel water and oil at once and survive washing. In outdoor gear they have mostly appeared as the durable water repellent (DWR) finish on rain shells, tent flies, sleeping-bag shells, pack fabrics and gaiters, and in some membrane laminates. The defining property that made them useful, a carbon-fluorine bond that does not break down, is also why they persist in soil and water, which is why they are called “forever chemicals” and why several US states and the EU have restricted or are phasing out intentionally added PFAS in textiles, with outdoor apparel for severe weather generally on a later schedule.

The industry has largely moved. Most major brands have switched to PFAS-free DWR based on paraffin, silicone or acrylic polymers, and say so on the hangtag. Those finishes repel water but not oil and wear off faster. The alternative that predates all of them is wax: a cotton canvas impregnated with beeswax or a plant wax sheds rain by surface repellency and fibre swelling, and is renewed by rubbing more wax in. What to look for: “PFAS-free” or “PFC-free” stated explicitly, or a fabric that needs no DWR at all.

Flame retardants in tents

Most tents sold in the United States for the last several decades were treated with flame-retardant chemicals to pass CPAI-84, a flammability specification for camping tents published by the Canvas Products Association International in the 1980s and adopted into law by a handful of states. The specification does not require any particular chemical, but the cheapest way to make thin nylon or polyester pass it was to add a flame-retardant finish, historically including brominated and organophosphate compounds. A widely cited 2014 university study found these compounds in tent fabrics and on the hands of people who had pitched them.

Since then a growing number of tent makers, including several large ones, have dropped flame-retardant treatments entirely, and the state requirements have been relaxed or repealed in places. The situation is still uneven: some tents are FR-free, some are treated, and many do not say. What to look for: an explicit “no flame retardants” or “FR-free” statement. Absence of a CPAI-84 tag is a hint, not proof. And remember what the trade-off is: an untreated tent, canvas or nylon, will burn, so keep stoves, candles and fires out of and well away from it.

Foam pads and off-gassing

Self-inflating pads are open-cell polyurethane foam inside a polyester or nylon shell coated with polyurethane or TPU. Closed-cell foam pads are polyethylene or EVA. Air pads are TPU- or PU-laminated fabric, sometimes with polyester fill or foil baffles inside. The “new pad smell” is volatile compounds leaving the foam, adhesives and coatings; it fades, and manufacturers vary in what they use, but few disclose it. Some foams also carry flame retardants to meet furniture-type flammability rules, again without labelling. What to look for: a pad whose insulation is a fibre you can name (wool, cotton, kapok) rather than a foam, or, if you want foam, a maker who states the foam type and confirms no added flame retardants.

Polyurethane coatings and microfibre shedding

Polyurethane is the waterproof film on the inside of most tent floors, flies, pack liners and dry bags. It works until it does not: PU hydrolyses over years, going tacky, smelling sour and peeling, at which point the item is usually landfill because the coating cannot be renewed. Silicone coatings last longer but cannot be seam-taped. Neither can be repaired at home in any lasting way.

Separately, every polyester and nylon textile sheds fibre fragments in wear and washing, and fleece is the worst offender. Those fragments do not biodegrade. Natural fibres shed too; the difference is that cotton, wool and hemp fragments break down. This is an environmental point rather than a personal one, but it is part of what people mean when they ask for plastic-free camping gear, and it is why fibre content matters as much as finish.

Non toxic camping gear, category by category

Tent

Look for: an uncoated or wax-treated natural fibre, no flame-retardant finish, no PFAS DWR, poles that are wood or bare aluminium. Accept the weight: a non toxic tent in canvas is a basecamp shelter. Sleeping bag

Look for: disclosed fill (wool, down with a welfare standard, or named synthetic), a shell with no DWR or a PFAS-free one, a liner fabric you would wear against your skin. Ask what the shell fabric is coated with; “water-resistant” usually means a finish. Sleeping pad

Look for: no polyurethane foam, no PU or TPU film, a removable washable cover, a named natural insulator. Pack

Look for: fabric named by fibre, no PU-coated interior, PFAS-free or no DWR, repairable construction (sewn, not bonded). Rain shell and insulation

Look for: an explicit PFAS-free statement on any membrane jacket, and honesty about what it does: a waxed cotton shell is water-resistant, not waterproof, and it breathes and stays quiet. For insulation, wool or down over polyester fill if you want to avoid microfibre shedding. How to vet any brand

You do not need a lab. You need five answers, in writing, from customer service. A maker who has done the work will have them on hand; a maker who has not will send you a paragraph about their values.

  1. Fibre content, by percentage, for every layer. Shell, lining, fill, webbing, thread. “Recycled” and “eco” are not fibres.
  2. Finishes. Is there a DWR, and what chemistry is it? Is there a flame-retardant treatment? Antimicrobial or anti-odour finish (often silver or a biocide)?
  3. Coatings and films. PU, TPU, silicone, or none? If there is a membrane, what is it made of?
  4. Certifications, and for which component. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests a finished textile for a list of restricted substances. GOTS covers organic fibre content and processing chemistry. Eco Wool is a US standard for wool grown and processed without the usual pesticide dips and harsh scouring. bluesign audits mill chemistry. RDS covers down welfare. A certificate on the shell fabric says nothing about the foam inside.
  5. Repair and end of life. Can it be re-waxed, re-sewn, re-lofted? Will they repair it? What happens to it in twenty years?

That table is the whole honest case. If your trip is a fast alpine push where every ounce counts and the air is dry, synthetic gear may be the right tool and you should buy the PFAS-free, FR-free version of it. If your trips are damp forests, shoulder seasons, basecamps and a lifetime of the same gear, natural fibre wins on more rows than it loses, and you know exactly what you are sleeping in.
