Natural Wax Finish for Canvas Outdoor Gear
Maintain it. Renew it. Keep it in the wild.
Outdoor gear is meant to be used.
It should carry the marks of countless miles, changing seasons, rainstorms, and memorable adventures—not be discarded simply because the original finish has worn away.
Lucky Sheep® Trail Wax was developed with this philosophy in mind.
Rather than relying on fluorocarbon treatments, petroleum-based waxes, or synthetic waterproof coatings, we developed our own carefully refined blend of natural waxes, botanical oils, wool-derived conditioners, and mineral ingredients.
The result is a renewable natural finish designed to restore water repellency while preserving what makes natural-fiber outdoor gear different in the first place: breathability, flexibility, repairability, and long-term durability.
An Honest Approach to Waterproofing
We believe you should know what you’re putting on your gear—and what you’re carrying with you into the wild.
Every ingredient in Lucky Sheep Trail Wax has been selected for a purpose: water repellency, durability, flexibility, longevity, or protection of the fabric.
The exact formulation is the result of our own experimentation, refinement, and real-world field testing, but we’re transparent about the kinds of materials we use.
What’s Inside
Lucky Sheep Trail Wax is crafted from carefully selected natural materials, including:
- Natural beeswax
- Plant-derived waxes
- Botanical oils
- Wool-derived lanolin
- Mineral zinc compounds
What’s Not
Sometimes what we leave out matters just as much as what we put in.
Lucky Sheep Trail Wax contains no:
- PFAS or PFC fluorinated water repellents
- Petroleum waxes
- Silicone waterproofing
- Polyurethane coatings
- Acrylic coatings
- Synthetic fluoropolymer DWR treatments
Just a thoughtfully developed natural wax finish made for natural-fiber outdoor gear.
Made to Be Renewed
Water-resistant finishes wear over time. We don’t consider that a flaw.
It’s part of owning gear made from natural materials.
Instead of depending on a permanent synthetic membrane or disposable factory coating, Lucky Sheep waxed canvas can simply be renewed when needed.
Rub on a fresh layer of Lucky Sheep Trail Wax, work it into the fabric with gentle heat, and head back outside.
Use it to maintain Lucky Sheep waxed canvas:
- Rain shells and jackets
- Backpacks
- Tipi tents
- Gaiters
- Other waxed canvas equipment
It can also be used to reproof many other untreated or previously waxed cotton canvas products.
Each new Lucky Sheep waxed canvas jacket and 65-liter backpack includes a bar of Lucky Sheep Trail Wax. Additional bars are available whenever your gear needs refreshing.
How to Apply
Make sure the fabric is clean and completely dry.
Rub Lucky Sheep Trail Wax evenly over the canvas, concentrating especially on seams, shoulders, high-wear areas, and places where water repellency has diminished.
Use a hair dryer or heat gun on a low setting to gently warm the wax until it melts into the fibers.
Allow the fabric to cool completely.
Test the gear in wet conditions. If greater water repellency is desired, apply another light coat.
Several thin applications generally work better than one heavy application.
Real Gear Gets Better With Use
The best outdoor gear doesn’t exist simply to sit in your pack. Its true test comes under harsh field conditions.
Scratches, creases, worn spots, and fading aren’t necessarily signs that good gear is finished. They’re evidence that it has been somewhere.
Maintain it. Repair it. Re-wax it. Keep using it.
That’s part of the Lucky Sheep approach to outdoor gear: choosing natural materials, understanding how they work, and taking care of them so they can accompany you for years of adventures.
