The best non toxic sleeping bag is the one whose materials you can name, all the way down. Most bags are a polyester shell with a fluorinated water-repellent finish, a polyurethane coating or laminate, polyester or down fill, and sometimes a flame-retardant treatment, and none of that appears on the hang tag. This is a buying guide, not a list of brands: which fill, shell and liner materials matter, which finishes to avoid, which certifications actually mean something, the trade-offs you accept when you go natural, a checklist, and how our two wool bags measure up against it.

Why “non-toxic” is about the whole bag
You spend eight hours a night inside a sleeping bag with your face on the collar, breathing what the fabric gives off and sweating roughly half a litre of water into it. A bag has four material decisions, fill, shell, liner and hardware, and the finishes applied to them. A bag can have organic cotton on the outside and still be a chemistry set inside. Read the whole spec.
Fill: wool, down or polyester
The fill is the insulation and most of the weight. Three options dominate.
- Polyester. Cheapest, dries fast, insulates somewhat when wet. It is petroleum, it sheds microfibres, and it is often the fill that comes with flame-retardant treatment on budget bags. Bulky and heavy for its warmth; loses loft after a few seasons of compression.
- Down. The lightest and most compressible insulation there is, which is why every ultralight quilt uses it. It is natural. The concerns are ethical sourcing (look for RDS or equivalent), the fact that down collapses when wet and takes a long time to dry, and that the shell around it is almost always a nylon with DWR because down cannot afford to get damp. - Wool batting. Heavier than down, roughly three times heavier for the same temperature rating. In exchange it keeps insulating when damp, absorbs 13–16 % of its weight in moisture at 65 % humidity (published textile data) without feeling wet, releases heat as it absorbs that moisture (about 960 kJ per kg of water taken up), and does not need a coated shell to protect it. Naturally flame-resistant, so no treatment is needed. Lasts decades.
What to ask: what is the fill, where is it from, and what has been done to it. “Eco Wool” is US wool processed without chemical scouring agents or moth-proofing. For down, ask for the RDS certificate and the fill power.
Shell: organic cotton or nylon with DWR
Almost every mainstream bag uses a nylon or polyester ripstop shell with a DWR finish. The DWR is the problem. It has historically been fluorinated (PFAS), which is persistent in the body and the environment and is now being regulated out of textiles in the EU and several US states. The PFAS-free replacements are better but are still a chemical finish on a petroleum fabric, and any shell tight enough to hold down is tight enough to trap your sweat.
An organic cotton shell breathes. It lets the half-litre of water you lose overnight pass through into the wool and out, so the inside of the bag does not feel clammy at 3 a.m. It is quiet. It does not need a DWR because wool does not fail when it gets damp. The trade is that cotton weighs more than 20-denier nylon, and it is not a rain shell; you sleep under a tarp or in a tent, as you would with any bag.
Our shells are organic cotton treated with beeswax, which sheds condensation drips from a tent wall while keeping the weave open. No coating, no laminate.
Liner: the layer on your skin
The liner is the fabric you actually touch all night and the one most often ignored. Polyester taffeta is the industry default: slick, cold to the touch, holds under 1 % of its weight in moisture, so sweat stays on your skin until it evaporates. A merino jersey liner holds moisture in the fibre instead, feels warm when you climb in, and washes like a T-shirt. A worsted wool liner such as WeatherWool is denser and more durable with the same moisture behaviour. If a bag has a fixed polyester liner, you can add a merino sleeping bag liner and get most of the benefit.
Zipper and hardware
Be realistic here. Virtually every sleeping bag on the market, ours included, closes with a standard plastic coil zipper, because nothing else is light, reliable and snag-resistant enough. The zipper is a small fraction of the bag’s material, it is not against your skin, and it is not treated with anything. A bag that is natural fibre everywhere except the zipper is a very different object from a bag that is polyester everywhere except the label. Judge the bag by the fabric you sleep in, not the slider.
Finishes to avoid
- PFAS-based DWR. Any “water-repellent” shell should come with a plain statement that the finish is PFAS-free. If the brand will not say, assume it is not.
- Polyurethane coatings and laminates. Common on the footbox and hood of “weather-resistant” bags. They stop breathing entirely and eventually delaminate.
- Flame retardants. Applied to some polyester-filled and foam-padded bags, especially children’s bags. Wool does not need them because it is naturally slow to ignite. Ask directly whether any flame-retardant chemical has been applied.
- Antimicrobial and odour treatments. Silver and other biocides on liners. Wool is naturally odour-resistant; if a liner needs a treatment to stop smelling, that is information about the liner.

Certifications that mean something
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) covers organic fibre content and restricts the chemicals used in processing the fabric. The strongest general standard for cotton.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished textile for a list of harmful substances. It does not require organic fibre and it does not cover synthetics’ microfibre shedding, but it does catch formaldehyde, heavy metals and many finishes.
- Eco Wool is a US wool programme: sheep raised without routine pesticide dipping, wool washed with mild soap, no moth-proofing or bleaching. It is the batting in our bags.
- RDS (Responsible Down Standard) is an animal-welfare chain-of-custody for down. It says nothing about the shell or finishes, so pair it with the questions above.
A certificate is only as good as the part of the bag it covers. A GOTS-certified shell over a treated polyester fill is half an answer. Ask what each certificate applies to.
The honest trade-offs
Going natural costs you three things, and it is better to know them up front.
- Weight. A 20°F wool bag weighs about 4 lb. A 20°F down quilt weighs a third of that. If you count grams, a wool bag is a deliberate choice for comfort and durability over pack weight, not a way to shave ounces. We never call our bags ultralight.
- Price. Organic cotton, US wool and small-batch sewing cost more than polyester from a large factory. Our backpacking bag starts at $557. Divide that by the decades a wool bag lasts and it is a different calculation, but the number on the day is real.
- Care. Wool bags are aired in the sun, spot-cleaned, and washed rarely; a removable merino liner takes most of the washing. No tumble dryer. That is less work than it sounds, but it is different from throwing a synthetic bag in the machine.
Temperature ratings deserve their own honesty. Lab ratings on mainstream bags follow ISO 23537-1 (formerly EN 13537) with comfort, limit and extreme figures. Our ratings are field ratings from years of use in the Southern Appalachians and are not ISO-tested. Compare them with a lab “comfort” figure, not the “limit” figure, and read sleeping bag temp ratings explained before you buy any bag.
Best non toxic sleeping bag checklist
- Fill named and sourced: wool (Eco Wool or equivalent) or RDS down; no polyester fill.
- Shell is organic cotton or another natural fibre; if synthetic, a written PFAS-free statement.
- No polyurethane coating or laminate anywhere on the bag.
- No flame-retardant treatment, confirmed in writing.
- Liner is merino or wool, or removable so you can replace it.
- No antimicrobial or odour treatments.
- Certifications matched to the part they cover (GOTS shell, Eco Wool fill, OEKO-TEX finished product).
- Temperature rating stated as ISO comfort or as a field rating, clearly labelled which.
- Repairable, with a workmanship guarantee, so it does not become landfill in five years.

Completing the system: liner and pad
A non-toxic bag on a polyurethane-foam or TPU inflatable pad is still a half-answer, because the pad is under you all night too. The organic wool sleeping pad is dense US wool felt in a removable organic cotton cover: ¼ in (32 oz, packs to about 6 × 12 × 12 in) for backpacking, ¾ in or 1.5 in for basecamp. No foam, no off-gassing, and it doubles as the frame of our 65 L canvas pack. The merino liner adds about 10°F to either bag, keeps the inside clean, and is the only part that needs regular washing.
