Canvas Tarp vs Tent: Shelter Weight, Condensation and When to Skip the Tent

Sleeping outside without a tent is not a stunt. Under a tarp you carry a fraction of the weight, wake up dry instead of dripping with condensation, and see the ridgeline from your bag. What you give up is bugs, wind and walls. This guide lays out the trade honestly, shows the three pitches that cover most nights, says when a tipi or tent is the better tool, and explains why a canvas tarp behaves differently from a nylon one.

What a tarp gives up

  • Bugs. Nothing stops mosquitoes, ticks or midges. In bug season you need a head net, a bivy or a merino sleep sack pulled over your head, or you need a tent.
  • Wind-driven rain. A tarp stops what falls on it. Rain blown sideways under the edge lands on you, and a low pitch that fixes that also traps the air you wanted.
  • Warmth. A closed tent holds a few degrees over the outside air. A tarp holds none, so your bag does all the work. Budget a warmer bag or a liner.
  • Privacy and containment. Changing clothes, keeping a dog in, keeping a toddler in, keeping mice out of your food: all harder under a tarp.
  • Skill. A tent pitches the same way every night. A tarp asks you to read the wind, find anchors and adjust the pitch. That is a feature after ten nights and a liability on the first.

What a tarp gains

  • Weight and bulk. One sheet of fabric, a few lines, no poles unless you cut them. The tipi canvas alone is about 10 lb in the 9-foot size and 20 lb in the 12-foot; a tarp is a small fraction of that and packs flat against the back panel of a pack.
  • Airflow, therefore no condensation. An adult breathes and sweats out roughly half a litre of water overnight. In a closed tent it lands on the walls; under a tarp it blows away. This is the single biggest practical reason experienced campers go without a tent (see why you wake up wet).
  • The view, and the weather report. You see the stars, the sunrise and the front coming in, and you hear the owl. You also smell rain before it arrives.
  • Speed and versatility. A tarp goes up in two minutes as a lunch shelter, a porch on a tent, a cook shelter for a group or a ground cloth. A tent is only a tent.
  • Repairability. A flat sheet with tie-outs is the simplest shelter there is to patch, re-wax and re-sew.

A-frame: the all-rounder

A ridgeline between two poles or trees, the tarp draped over it, the four corners staked out. Head-height at the ridge of about 3 to 4 feet gives room to sit up; lower it to 2 feet in wind and rain. Pitch the ridge parallel to the wind so gusts pass through rather than push the wall. On a canvas tarp, keep the ridge taut and the sides at roughly 45 degrees so water runs straight off. Lean-to: for fair weather and a fire

One long edge lifted on two poles or tied high between trees, the opposite edge staked to the ground. The open face goes to the view or the fire, the closed face to the wind. It is the airiest pitch, the fastest to put up and the least protective; a shift in wind direction at 2 a.m. means rain in your face. With a canvas tarp a lean-to facing a small fire reflects real warmth back onto the sleeper, and canvas does not melt from a stray spark the way nylon does. Keep the fire small and 10 feet off.

Plow point: one pole, foul weather

Stake one corner of the tarp on the ground into the wind, lift the diagonally opposite corner on a single pole or a stick tied to a tree, and stake the two remaining corners down. The result is a low wedge, closed at the back and open at the front, that sheds wind from three sides on one pole. It is cramped, but it is the pitch that holds when a storm comes through, and it needs only one stick.

Poles, lines and stakes

  • Trekking poles, a cut sapling or a dead branch all work. For a canvas tarp use something with a blunt top so it does not wear a hole; a wad of cloth or a stone in the tie-out works.
  • Carry 6 to 8 lengths of cord of 8 to 10 feet. Learn one adjustable knot (the taut-line hitch) and one fixed one (bowline). Stakes go in at 45 degrees leaning away from the tarp.
  • Re-tension after dark. Canvas relaxes slightly as it takes on the evening damp; nylon stretches when wet. Either way, one round of the lines at bedtime stops the flapping.

When a tipi or tent is the right call

A tarp is a fair-weather-to-moderate-weather tool for one or two people who move every day. A tent earns its weight when any of the following is true:

  • Winter. Snow load, spindrift and hours of darkness call for walls. A canvas tipi with a small fire outside the door is a different world from a tarp at 10°F.
  • Sustained storms. Two days of wind-driven rain gets under any tarp eventually.
  • Groups and families. A 12-foot tipi sleeps a family with room to sit, cook under the door flap and dry gear.
  • Long stays. Basecamp, a week at a festival, a hunting camp: comfort and stowage beat ounces when you are not carrying anything.
  • Peak bug season, unless you are willing to sleep in a head net.

Canvas versus nylon: the breathing difference

Out in the open, a nylon tarp and a canvas tarp both let your night’s moisture escape, because most of the air around you is moving. Pitch either one low for weather and the difference shows. Coated nylon is a vapour barrier; the air trapped under a low nylon pitch cools against the sheet and the underside beads and drips, the same failure a single-wall nylon tent has. Cotton canvas passes vapour through the fibre (cotton itself holds 7 to 8 percent of its weight in moisture at 65 percent humidity, against 4 to 4.5 percent for nylon, per published textile data), so a low canvas pitch stays dry inside in conditions where nylon rains on you. Canvas is also quiet in wind, does not melt from a spark, and blocks more of the sun’s heat on a hot afternoon.

The cost is weight and absorbency: canvas is heavier for its area and it takes on water in prolonged rain, wetting through slowly rather than leaking suddenly. Dry it before it goes in the pack for long. As a sustainable tarp it has a different lifecycle too: organic cotton and beeswax, no polyurethane coating, no PFAS, re-waxed with Trail Wax when it wears rather than replaced when the coating fails. What goes underneath: ground cloth and wool pad

A tarp has no floor, so the ground system matters more than it does in a tent. Two layers do the job. First, a canvas ground cloth or a folded corner of the tarp itself keeps ground moisture and grit off the bag. Second, insulation: the ground pulls heat out of a body far faster than the air does, and a bag’s underside is compressed to nothing. The wool sleeping pad is dense US wool felt in a washable organic cotton cover; the quarter-inch version is 32 oz and rolls to about 6 by 12 by 12 inches, and it doubles as the frame of the 65-litre canvas pack, which is how the weight pays for itself. Unlike a foam or air pad it is silent, cannot puncture, and stays warm when damp.

Pair the pad with a bag that shrugs off dew. Under a tarp your bag will get damp on the outside most nights, from dew, from fog, from a drip at the edge. Down flattens when it does; a wool bag with a beeswax cotton shell does not care.
