Three Layers, One Idea

Merino next to the skin to move moisture. Wool felt in the middle to hold warmth when it is damp. Waxed canvas on the outside to turn rain and wind while the water vapor keeps leaving. The Shell

Outside — the Lightweight Waxed Canvas Rain Jacket. 10 oz organic cotton canvas with a natural wax finish. PFAS-free. About 2 lb, sizes S–XL, $525. Gusseted and cut generously so the vest fits underneath; hood, full zip, hand pockets, and no swish when you walk.

It is water-resistant, not waterproof. It sheds rain and wind for hours; under prolonged heavy rain it wets through slowly rather than failing all at once, and it keeps breathing while it does. The Warm Layer

In the middle — the Wool Felt Adventure Vest. Dense American wool felt in place of a synthetic puffy. It keeps insulating when it is damp, resists odor, and it is the layer that stays on around camp when the jacket comes off. $175.

Merino Next to the Skin

• Merino Bandana — 22 × 22 in, 3.2 oz, grey. Headwrap, neck cover, or a second layer under a hat. Warm even when wet. $29.
• Merino Wool Buff — seamless neck gaiter, headband, face cover or eye mask; Standard or Long (fold the Long for a double layer). $32.
• Merino Scarf/Shawl — the piece for the drive in, the cabin evening and the cold platform. $90.

Every piece is repairable, and the canvas is re-waxable for as long as you own it. Layer for the conditions, adjust as you move, and let the fibers do what they know how to do.
